National Cross Country

A colorful national cross Country event took place at Mpohor in the western region from 7th to 9th February,2 019. Six males and females respectively from each region participated in the event which covered a distance of ten kilometers. Malik Yakubu of the Ashanti Region emerged winner of the male category whiles Ramata Abdulai from the Upper West Region won the female category. The Guest of Honour, Hon. Curtis Perry Okudjeto, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports who stood in for the Minster, Hon. Isaac Kwame Asiamah, said it is the Ministry’s mandate to use sports as a major tool for job creation, recreation, education and to a larger extent crime prevention, hence the government, led by H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo is building multipurpose youth and sports resource centers in every region to serve as a hub, where sportsmen and women can find the space to develop their sporting talents.

He further stated that this year, the Government will support more of such sporting activities as we kick start Ghana’s preparation towards the African Games in 2023 to be hosted by us. On his part, the Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Prof. Peter Twumasi, indicated that this competition, which was last organized in 2010, is aimed at unearthing talents who could best represent the nation in long-distance events at both local and international competitions. He said the Authority is determined to revive all dormant sporting events and the cross country competition is just a curtain-raiser for a busy 2019 sports calendar.
