The 2019 Inter-District Sports festival aimed at unearthing talents to feed the various National teams for future events has officially commenced in Accra, with 25 districts in the Greater Accra Municipality participating in the four-day sports festival.
The event, organized under the auspices of the Greater Accra Regional Sports Authority in collaboration with the Regional Coordinating Council and the National Sports Authority under the theme “Sports, an instrument to National Development” would see the various districts battling it out in sporting disciplines like football, handball, basketball, table tennis, volleyball and athletics.
The Director General for National Sports Authority (NSA) Professor Peter Twumasi, who was the guest of honour, in a speech thanked the organizers of the Sports Festival for the efforts made towards the sustenance of the festival, which was revived last year. According to him, this serves as a platform for grassroots and the mass participation in sports, talent identification of athletes to feed the various national teams.
“Today I am very happy because this festival is a strong indication or evidence that the NSA is living up to its mandate, as enshrined in the sports Act 934.
“I believe the evidence will be crystal clear when all the regional sports committees and the district sports units are formed throughout the country and bringing sports development closer to our people” he noted.
Professor Twumasi, who noted that he was more than convinced the various teams would display their sporting prowess, skills and talents in the various disciplines to achieve a successful and memorable festival that would also forge unity and friendship among the districts. He further noted that it is the vision of the Sports Ministry and Government to promote youth participation in sports development.
“It has been the resolve and commitment of the Sports Minister Mr Isaac Kwame Asiamah and H.E. Akufo-Addo led Government to promote youth participation in sports, business recreation and leisure activities through competitive sports, such as this festival.
“This is being achieved through the expansion of sports and recreational infrastructure nationwide in order to make sports more accessible and an integral part of our community lifestyle”.
Some of the districts partaking in the four-day festival includes; Ga East Municipal, Ningo Prampram District Assembly, Shai Osudoku District Assembly, Abokobi, Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly, Adentan Municipal Assembly, Kpone Katamanso Municipal Assembly, Tema Metropolitan Assembly, Ashaiman, Ga Central, La Nkwantanang Madina.
