The second edition of the much anticipated Western Region inter-districts athletics championship will finally see the light of day. The event has now been scheduled for March 28, 2020.
The one-day event is being organized by the Western Regional Sports Authority in collaboration with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) as the headline sponsor.
Since the maiden edition in 2018, the Western Region Sports Authority has been grappling to organize the second edition which was supposed to have come off last year December 2019, but financial constraints derailed their target
But in an exclusive interview with Kyfilla.com, the Western Regional Sports Director, Mr. Joseph Alabi Bortey revealed that after numerous proposals to some Corporate bodies for assistance, GNPC has taken the giant step and have come to their aid once again to serve as the headline sponsor for the competition.
In the interview, Mr Alabi Bortey indicated that 14 districts with 50 contingents (45 athletes & 5 officials) will participate in eleven events during the competition namely: 5000m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100m, relay,4x200m relay, 4 x 4 relay, 800m, high jump, 1500m both male and female.
He mentioned that GNPC is pumping a whopping GH¢47,900.00 into the successful organization of the competition.
He reiterated the fact that the selected athletes will be trained for the various upcoming regional sports festival as well as the national sports festival before the summer Olympic games in Tokyo 2020.
Mr Alabi further stated that he takes lots of inspiration from his Boss, the Director-General of the National Sports Authority – Professor Peter Twumasi who has made many inroads in sports development within this short time upon assumption of office.
He added that the Director-General has given his blessings to the event and promised to be present for the launch as well as the main event same as the Western Regional Minister Hon. Dr Kwabena Okyere Darko.
The 2020 NSA/GNPC athletics’ Championship is themed ‘Unearthing talents, creating opportunities for peace and development through Athletics’.
