The Government of Ghana through the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS), the National Youth Authority and the National Sports Authority (NSA), has embarked on a nationwide sports infrastructural development, which seeks to construct new facilities and to renovate existing dilapidated ones.
Ten new sports centers are currently being constructed in all the ten regions and it is expected that the six newly created regions will have their share of this developmental projects.
Last month, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Honorable Isaac K. Asiamah with the support of other dignitaries, cut the sod for the reconstruction of the Nkawkaw Sports Stadium. The other district sporting facilities have all been earmarked for renovation or reconstruction.
In a related development, the reconstruction of the Tema Sports Stadium will commence very soon. The Ghana Gas Company Limited has reached an agreement with the NSA to upgrade the offices of the Greater Accra Sports Directorate at the Tema Stadium. Furthermore, it is expected that the Government will undertake other infrastructural development in the facility such as an athletics oval, hostels, a multipurpose court and a FIFA standard pitch, which will ensure a comprehensive sports development and promotion in the Greater Accra Region.
The board of the National Sports Authority (NSA) is also working on a sponsorship package to get the National Hockey Stadium renovated, so as to enhance the development of the sport as Ghana prepares to host the 13th African Games in 2023.
It is expected that the Greater Accra Sports Regional Directorate will operate from this facility after the renovation. This we believe will further offer our football clubs enough playing fields so as to ease the pressure on the other bigger existing stadia in the country.
