10th International President’s Cup Chess Championship Opened In Accra

Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon Evans Opoku Bobie on Thursday July 15, 2021 on behalf of the sector Minister, Hon Mustapha Ussif opened the 10th International President’s Cup Chess Championship being hosted in Accra, Ghana.

Ghana, the United States of America and Nigeria are among the countries competing in this prestigious three-day tournament.

In his opening remarks, the Deputy Minister commended the organizers of the competition and pledged government’s commitment to develop all manner of sports to create space for every individual.

He however advised Ghana Chess Federation (GCF) to introduce the sport at grassroot level especially in schools to enhance its national appeal.

Among the Ghanaian contingent is the famous eight-year old Under-9 African Chess reigning Champion, Master Dave Chief Quansah Acheampong.

Also present for the opening ceremony were Director General of National Sports Authority (NSA), Prof Peter Twumasi, his two Deputies, Mr Kwame Amponfi Jnr (Technical) and Mr Majeed Bawa (Admin), and President of Ghana Chess Federation, Mr Philip Ameku.

The 10th President’s Cup Chess Championships will see 30 players compete for the coveted prize.
