A high-level Ghanaian delegation led by Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Prof. Peter Twumasi have arrived safely in Tokyo, Japan for the ongoing 2020 Olympic Games.
The team departed Ghana on Tuesday July 20, 2021 and arrived in the early hours of Thursday July 22, 2021 to offer support to Ghana’s Olympic Team who had been in the Asian country for the past three weeks preparing for this summer’s Games.
The officials, after nearly 36 hours of travel upon arrival went through stringent COVID-19 screening exercise set up by the Japanese government as part of the laid down formalities to adequately stage the games in a COVID-free environment.
The NSA Boss, Prof. Peter Twumasi revealed in a Facebook post that, none of the Ghanaian athletes and officials had tested positive for the coronavirus, hence, have all been admitted to the Games Village.
Amongst Ghana’s team of officials present in Tokyo are the Director General of the National Sports Authority Prof. Peter Twumasi who leads the delegation, Secretary General of the Ghana Olympics Committee Mr Mohammed Shanoon, Chef De Mission, Mr Michael Aggrey, Vice President of Ghana Athletics Association, Mr Afelibiek Ababu and Deputy Director HR of Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ms Francisca Atuluk.
A total of fourteen (14) athletes, including the Men’s 4x100m relay team of Joseph Paul Amoah, Benjamin Azamati, Sean Safo-Antwi & Joseph Manu as well as three boxers; Suleman Tetteh, Samuel Takyi and Shakur Samir and weightlifter, Christian Amoah will all compete for Ghana.
The rest of the athletes; two swimmers and triple jump athlete Nadia Eke who is Ghana’s flag bearer at the Olympic Games have all joined the team from their base in abroad.
Ghana’s Youth and Sports Minister Hon. Mustapha Ussif is expected to arrive in Tokyo in time to witness the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games that will be held on Friday, July 23, 2021.
