[TOKYO OLYMPIC GAMES]: Ghanaian Boxers Secure Automatic Qualification To The Next Stage

All the three boxers Ghana sent to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games have secured automatic qualification to 1/16th of the competition, the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has confirmed.

This latest development comes after Sulemanu Tetteh, a Flyweight boxer, Samuel Takyi, a featherweight boxer, and Shakur Samed, Ghana’s Light Heavyweight boxer drew a bye in the ongoing Tokyo Olympic Games.

The boxers have thus qualified to the 1/16 of the tournament meaning, the Black Bombers have two fights to the medal zone.

Captain of the team, Sulemanu Tetteh booked his ticket for the Olympics by placing 3rd in the African qualifying tournament in Senegal in February 2020. He is now competing in his second Olympic Games, following his participation in the London 2012 edition.

Samuel Takyi also in March 2020 won a unanimous decision over Isaac Masembe of Uganda in a qualifier in the third-place box off in Senegal to qualify for the sporting event.

Shakul Samed, the younger brother of Bastir Samir and Issah Samir, became the third Ghanaian boxer to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games based on the Boxing Task Force (BTF) rankings released in February 2021, which placed him 10th in the world and 3rd in Africa.

The Black Bombers are Ghana’s most successful Olympic team, having won three of the country’s four medals at the world’s largest sports event.
