President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo Rewards Ghana’s Tokyo Olympic Team

President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addohas rewarded Ghana’s 2020 Tokyo Olympic Team when the contingent called on him on Friday, August 20, 2021 at the Jubilee House in Accra.

The visit was among other things to officially inform the President of Ghana’s performance at the Olympic Games in Japan and was attended by officials from Ministry of Youth and Sports, National Sports Authority and Ghana Olympic Committee.

Ghana made a number of impressions during the games including a national record set by the 4x100m relay team when they booked a spot in the finals of the event. Joseph Paul Amoah also ran the fastest 200m time of 20.35 seconds of any Ghanaian athlete at the games. In swimming, Abeiku Jackson who topped his heat also broke his own national record, and Christian Amoah of weightlifting also broke a national record and currently ranked 12th in the world in his weight division.

Despite many achievements by individual athletes among the 14 competitors Ghana presented during the games, the highlight was a boxing medal won by youngster Samuel Takyi whose historic feat in boxing, featherweight division ended Ghana’s 50 year wait for an Olympic boxing medal.

President Akufo-Addo during the short ceremony announced that bronze medalist, Samuel Takyi who won Ghana’s first Olympic medal in 29 years will be given a car, $10,000 in cash for his efforts at the Olympic Games.

The President, who thanked the entire contingent for making Ghana proud in Toyo also made a financial commitment of $20,000 to be put in a career development fund for the 20 year old boxer.

The President also announced some financial entitlements to the entire contingent by revealing, each member of Ghana’s contingent that represented the county in Tokyo Olympic Games will pocket an amount of $5,000.

In addition, all the athletes and officials for the global sports event were given medals by the president in appreciation of their performance.
