The Male & Female Rugby Teams Of Ghana Win West Africa 7s Pre-World Cup qualifiers

The male and female national rugby teams of Ghana have emerged champions of the West African edition of the Rugby 7s Pre-World Cup qualifiers.

The qualifiers, which took place at the Paa Joe Stadium in Kumasi on Saturday, November 27 and Sunday, November 28 saw Ghana battling five other countries; Niger, Togo, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and Benin to win the coveted title.

Ghana’s male Rugby team; the Eagles beat Niger 32-0 in the first game before comfortably winning 50-0 against Benin.

Ghana negotiated a win against Benin yet again in the semifinal before winning the coveted trophy after a hard-fought 17-12 win against Burkina Faso.

On the other hand, the national female Rugby team; the Eaglets thrashed Togo 51-0 in their first game.

But the Eaglets struggled in the early parts of the second game against Burkina Faso but recovered to secure a 19-17 win.

The Ladies also secured comfortable victories against Benin and Ivory Coast to finish as overall winners with 12 points.

Both the male and the female rugby teams are through to the final stage of the Rugby 7s World Cup qualifiers.

Ghana’s Polina Yaa Mensah climaxed her impressive display by winning the Most Value Player (MVP) and the Top Try Scorer of the tournament.

Acting (Ag.) Ashanti Regional Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Mr Emmanuel Kojo Appiah represented Director General of NSA, Prof Peter Twumasi and Sports Minister Hon Mustapha Ussif as a special guest for the closing ceremony
