The senior National female team, the Black Queens are set for a title defence in Cote D’ivoire at this year’s West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Zone B Championship with a crunch encounter against Senegal on May 8, 2019 at 18:30 hours.
The Queens, who are headed by a former player Madam Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo are housed in Group A alongside host country Cote D’ivoire, Togo and Senegal, will need to fend off a stiff competition from the physicality of the Senegalese side to open their campaign with a win to cushion them into the eight nation tournament that will run from May 8-18, 2019.
With senior and experienced players like goalkeeper Fafali Dumehasi, Janet Egyir, Ellen Coleman, Gladys Amfobea, Juliet Acheampong, Grace Asantewaa, Mavis Owusu, Jane Ayieyam, Alice Kusi, and Rita Okyere, who have all tasted the tournament before, they would be expected to guide the young ones to be calm and composed on the pitch to deliver the must win game to boost the confidence of the team going forward in the tournament.
Having drafted in young lads like Mukarama Abdulai, Justice Tweneboah, Grace Animah, Blessing Agbomadzi, Evelyn Badu, Linda Addai, Anastasia Akyaa, Diana Wiegbe, Azume Adams and Barikisu Isshaku, who are having their first time at this championship, Madam Tagoe is full of hopes that they would retain the trophy and make Ghana proud once again.
“We are going into this championship with an aim of going far to the final, though we are going to take it game after game” the former defender said.
“We have to pick the three maximum points available in our opening game, which is very vital to our course”.
