The Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Perry Curtis Kwabla Okudzeto has reiterated government’s support for sporting activities in the country.
He made this statement on Saturday 9th May, 2020 at a brief ceremony to commemorate the May 9th stadium disaster at the forecourt of the Accra Sports stadium. Hon. Okudzeto said that, the Government under the leadership of President Akufo Addo has resolved to do all that is required to provide sporting facilities that meets international safety standards in all the regions to prevent such incidents from happening to sports fans.
The Director General of the National Sports Authority, Professor Peter Twumasi, General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association, Mr. Prosper Harrison Addo, Public Relations Officer for Asante Kotoko Kennedy Boakye Ansah and Chairman of The National Chapters Committee of Hearts of Oak Mr. Elvis Hermann Hesse all gave their solemn messages in respect of the departed souls at the 19th commemorative ceremony.
The May 9th disaster was a sad incident that happened in 2001 and it led to the death of 127 football fans after a stampede was caused by the firing of tear gas from the police following a decision by the referee Joseph Wilson Sey in a Ghana Premier league match between arch-rivals Accra Hearts of Oak S.C and Kumasi Asante Kotoko S.C at the Accra Sports Stadium.
