Ghana’s Joseph Paul Amoah To Compete Only in 200m & 4x100m At The Olympics

Ghanaian sprint sensation Joseph Paul Amoah has confirmed, he will be focusing on his preferred events 200m and 4x100m during this summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo, making him unavailable to compete in the 100m event.

Former KNUST student, Joseph Paul Amoah and former University of Ghana student, Benjamin Azamati were two persons from Ghana to have qualified to compete in the 100m and 200m sprints, as well as the men’s 4x100m at the Olympics.

Amoah narrowly missed the auto-qualifier by 0.007 seconds back in June 2019 during the NCAA Division I Championships in Austin, Texas but his personal best of 10.01 seconds got him through to the finals and qualified him in the 100m for the Tokyo Olympics

However, Paul Amoah who is also known as Joe Paul has chosen not to compete in the 100m, despite the fact that he is eligible to do so, in order for him to focus on the 200m, which is his specialty.

His personal best performance which has come in the 200m (20.08 seconds) broke the Ghanaian record previously held by three-time Olympian Emmanuel Tuffour by 0.07 seconds.

Paul Amoah was part of Ghana’s 4x100m men’s relay team that won gold at the 2019 African Games in Rabat, Morocco.

Noteworthy, the National Sports Authority (NSA) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS) hosted a delightful leaving ceremony for the Ghanaian Tokyo Olympic Games delegation before they travelled to Japan on Wednesday, June 30th, 2021.

In all, 14 athletes from five disciplines (Athletics, Boxing, Judo, Weightlifting and Swimming) have qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to represent Ghana. The Games will be taking place from July 23 to August 8, 2021.
