On Tuesday, August 3, 2021, Ghana’s Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS) inaugurated an 11-member committee including Prof Peter Twumasi, the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA) to carry out Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s aim of instituting a monthly National Fitness Day.
The Fitness Committee which will be chaired by the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Evans Opoku Bobie among other duties is to advise the Minister of Youth and Sports Hon Mustapha Ussif on the feasibility and strategic implementation of the National Fitness Day across the 16 regions of the country.
Other members of the Committee include the Mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah; the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Coastal Development Authority (CODA), Mr Jerry Ahmed Shaib; the outgoing Mayor of Tamale, Mr Musah Superior and representatives of the Office of the Vice President, Mr Tamimu Issah and Mr Ahmed Abdulai Abu.
The rest are a Deputy Director of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Mr Samuel Korsah, a representative of the Ministry of National Security, Madam Susana Amo, the Deputy National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party, Madam Perpetual Lomokie Akwada and Dr Gifty Oware Aboagye.
The Committee is to present its report to the MOYS within one month.
National Fitness Day
The day which is proposed to be marked nationwide on the first Saturday of every month is the brainchild of Vice President Bawumia who at the Commissioning of an astroturf last June at Adjiringanor charged the Ministry of Youth and Sports to make it a permanent feature on the country’s sporting calendar.
