Ghana had on previous occasions won the cup in 1963 and 1965.

The Cup is called the Mustapha Cup. The Cup will be placed at the AFRICAN SPORT MUSEUM & HALL OF FAME project, which will be set up later as part of the African Games to be hosted by Ghana in 2023.
