Ghana’s contingent of athletes, coaches and officials at the just ended 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games on Monday August, 09, 2021 called on Ghana’s Ambassador to Japan, His ExcellencyMr Frank Okyere, at the Embassy in Tokyo to present to him,the medal Ghana won at the Games.
This visit comes after 20-year-old featherweight boxer, Samuel Takyi won Ghana’s first and only Olympic medal in 29 years during the global sports event which ended on Sunday with a colorful closing ceremony.
Despite not winning any medal outside boxing at the games, Ghana’s 4x100m men’s relay team got a lot of attention and commendation after they booked a place in the final, the first 4x100m final since 1997 after qualifying with a time of 38.08seconds, breaking the national record which stood at 38.12seconds.
The delegation which was led by the Director General (DG) of National Sports Authority (NSA), Prof Peter Twumasi, and the President of Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Mr Ben NunooMensah, presented the Olympic boxing medal won by Samuel Takyi, Ghana’s first boxing medal at the Olympics in 50 years to Ambassador Okyere.
The Olympic Torch was also presented to the Ambassador who received the team on behalf of President Nana Addo DankwaAkufo-Addo and the people of Ghana.
The DG and the GOC President both thanked the Ambassador,his team and the good people of Japan for their hospitality andimmeasurable support they extended to the contingent during their stay in the Asian country.
The ambassador on his part also congratulated the Ghanaian Team for incident-free tournament and successfully representing the nation effectively in all the five disciplines i.e., athletics, boxing, judo, swimming and weightlifting at the OlympicGames.
He advised Ghanaians to jubilate in moderation over the success chalked due to COVID-19 restrictions and also, called on the people of Ghana to support Ghana sports to intensify its gains.
He was full of praise for the role Samuel Takyi played during the closing ceremony of the Olympics as representative of the African continent and standing side-by-side with President of International Olympic Committee, Mr Thomas Bach as he delivered his closing speech to the world.
