22ND ANNIVERSARY OF MAY 9 DISASTER COMMEMORATED

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon Mustapha Usif has tasked all Stakeholders in the Sporting Fraternity to ensure that safety measures are employed during all Football Matches and sports events to ensure the safety of all fans and patrons.

The Minister said this at the commemoration of the 22nd Anniversary of the May 9 Disaster. Hon. Ussif also used the occasion to entreat Ghanaians and Football fans to ensure that such an incident does not occur again.

He commended the efforts of the rescue team to save lives on that faithful day adding that they are worthy of mention during such an occasion.

The Director General of the National Sports Authority, Professor Peter Twumasi, speaking at the Event commended the Accra Sports Stadium Disaster Board of Trustees for their good efforts in catering for the bereaved Families over the years.

On his part, the General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association, Prosper Harrison Addo assured Ghanaians of their continuous commitment in ensuring that the Country does not witness such a tragedy again.

Present at the Commemoration were Representatives from Accra HEARTS of Oak, Kumasi Asante Kotoko, GHALCA, Accra Sports Stadium Disaster Trustees, Bereaved Family and Supporters Union.

The Event is held annually at the Forecourt of the Accra Sports Stadium to remember the 127 Souls who lost their lives during a Football Match between archrivals Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko on May 9, 2001
